This week’s Gospel is a juicy one! Lots to talk about here, as our Church faces division and our world struggles against religious extremism. I wonder what your group will find in this Gospel that addresses this tension… Is tradition nobler than progress? Or, vice-versa?

I had been delving into the Book of Acts with professor Matthews at BC’s School of Theology and Ministry when I found out that I would be interning at St. Mary, Queen of the Apostles. With Mary and the apostles at the forefront of my mind, I thought how fitting! Of course, the scene of Pentecost in the Book of Acts is one of the most thrilling in Scripture. The Holy Spirit gushes into the upper room in a violent wind and tongues of fire land on everyone’s head; it’s like reading a Marvel comic! Centuries of art, as well as Scripture (Acts 1:14), attest to Mary being at the very center of this event.  

I’m heading off on a much-needed two-week break, so here is another Beta for latah! (Ha! Just came up with that… yes, yes, I need a vacation) We’re back in John for the 21st Sunday in Ordinary Time which is, confusingly, on the 22nd. I will be praying for your groups while I’m away, for fruitful and fun conversations. Thank you for your ministry!

We encourage masks at Masses starting this Sunday (August 15th) for all guests. Masks will be required starting Monday, August 23rd at all events on the MQOA Campus.

This week we take a side trip from our side trip into John, to celebrate the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary! We Catholics could go on and on about Mary, and I hope that your groups find her worth gushing over too. Feast days are for feasting, so I pray you’ll feast on this Good Word of God this week.
