The Season of Creation begins September 1st on the World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation and runs until October 4th the Feast Day of Saint Francis of Assisi, patron saint of ecology and beloved by Christians around the world. It is a season to remember that all of Creation is imbued with God’s grace and that human beings and nature were created by God to live in harmony with one another. Indeed, “In Him all things were created, in heaven and on earth” (Colossians 1:16) and in Him, “all things become new” (2 Corinthians 5:17).
Nature is, perhaps, the best reminder for this capacity for renewal. The sun’s rays and the smell of flowers remind us that this renewal can be experienced with the senses. They also remind us that God enters into this world of ours through what we can sense and see. Such is the nature of the Sacraments. Water pouring over a new-born child, bread being consumed by a young one, oil marking the forehead of a catechumen; all these speak to the Sacraments of the Church mediating God’s grace through signs from creation perceptible to the senses.
Therefore, it is very fitting that this Season of Creation coincides with another season of sacramental prep here at Mary Queen of the Apostles Parish. Although, in truth, sacramental preparation can begin at any time of the year!
