On the first night of Alpha, we invite our guests to consider this question: “if it turns out that God exists after all, and you could ask one question, what would it be?” We’ve just started our 19th series of Alpha here at MQOA, and every time we start, we tend to hear the same kinds of questions.
Some ask, “am I doing this (life) right?” and other versions of that same question: “what does God want/expect of me?” “What am I here for? What is my purpose?”
Some (so many) ask a version of this question: “Why is there so much suffering in the world?” They want to know why God (a God described as omnipotent) would allow sadness, pain, suffering, death. For some, it’s stated more personally: “why did you let me go through that terrible experience? Why did you take my loved one from me?”
And still others ask, “how am I supposed to pray?” They want to know “should I be praying to God? To Jesus? To the Holy Spirit?” Ultimately, they are asking about how the Trinity works, how to relate to God and how God relates to us.
I think many people would be surprised that so many of us share these questions in common. God knows that my own prayer life so often revolves around these questions, and maybe yours does too. Sometimes I imagine God rolling God’s eyes at me, thinking “augh this again, Margo?” but I am more inclined to believe that God delights in my questions because it’s all part of the invitation I’ve been given to know God better.
At MQOA, we love the questions, and we love giving everyone a safe and judgment-free place to ask those questions. We still have room for you and your questions in this series of Alpha. Join us this Wednesday, January 20 at 7:00 PM from the comfiest seat in your house. Click thebutton below to go to the event page, and the link for the Zoom meeting is there. ALPHA #19
