I’m writing this blog post/newsletter entry early this week, because tomorrow I fully expect to be socked in at home, under a blanket catching up on reading (for work, I mean, of course!)… and because we have an important announcement for our Christmas Mass plans.
Without further ado, here’s the news: we’re celebrating both the Christmas Eve AND Christmas Day Masses at St. James in our parking lot- we will not offer Mass indoors for Christmas. If you’ve been paying attention to how things work around MQOA this year, you’ll have noticed that our first intention is always to make our Masses spiritual and safe for everyone; our guests, ministers, and volunteers. We care deeply about the well-being of anyone who comes to MQOA and takes our responsibility for your safety very seriously.
Of course, that relates directly to our mission as a parish. We center everything we do on the Eucharist — the real presence of Christ among us— and that inspires us to offer healing and welcome to everyone.
But hey! I don’t want this drive-in Mass plan to sound like bad news. If I’m honest, I’ve really come to adore our parking lot Masses. I love the idea of celebrating Christmas together this way. And as a Mass-goer, I really appreciate the luxury of being able to turn up the heat in my car, crank up the radio and sing along, without worrying about anyone being negatively affected by my germs (or singing voice)! And Christ will come to your driver’s side window- we bring Communion to you at your car.
Of course, if Mass in the car isn’t your speed (ha!) or you can’t be with us in person for whatever reason, be sure to tune in to our online Mass, which will be posted on Christmas Eve. You can snuggle up with your housemates after breakfast and presents on Christmas morning and enjoy this beautiful presentation of Christmas Mass, with all the songs, symbols, and bible stories you love, and inspiring words from Fr. Murray… plus a few other surprises.
This will be a Christmas to remember. Let’s make it special, hope-filled, Christ-filled for each other. Stay safe out there, MQOA-ers! Merry Christmas!
